The Civil Engineering Technology program
Why study Civil Engineering Technology
at SPSU?
Southern Polytechnic's Civil Engineering Technology program has the highest enrollment of any
four-year Bachelor of Science CET program in the country. Our facilities are among the best, with
extensive computer and testing laboratories. Our graduates meet the educational requirements
needed to seek registration as professional engineers in Georgia and most other states.
About the program
The Civil Engineering Technology program at Southern Polytechnic State University prepares students
for a number of specialized careers in civil engineering. We stress standard design practice and
incorporate laboratory experience into the majority of our courses, providing our students with the
theory and practice required to move rapidly and successfully into the work force.
The program encompasses several technical fields, which include:
- Structural design: bridges, tunnels, foundations, buildings
- Environmental control: air and water quality, waste treatment and disposal
- Transportation: roads and highways, intersections, airports, subways
- Site planning: subdivision design, drainage facilities, earthwork
- Surveying: boundary and topographical surveys, route and construction surveys
- Geotechnics: soil properties, exploration, foundation design
The faculty
The Civil Engineering Technology faculty are highly qualified and combine solid industrial experience
with their expertise as teachers. Most of the faculty are registered professional engineers or
registered land surveyors.
Are there learning opportunities outside the classroom?
Opportunities exist for co-op, summer and part-time employment. Many students also compete and
perform well in regional and national competitions sponsored by our four student clubs: the American
Society of Civil Engineers, the Surveying and Mapping Society of Georgia, the American Concrete
Institute, and the Institute of Transportation Engineers.
What can I do with a Civil Engineering Technology degree?
With a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering Technology, you can work as a civil engineer,
project engineer, site engineer, project manager, surveyor, or estimator. Our graduates accept
positions with federal, state, and local governments, construction companies, engineering consulting
firms, and surveying companies. Others pursue graduate study at such schools as the University of
Tennessee and Clemson University.
Will I find employment?
Civil engineering technology graduates are highly recruited by industry professionals. Industry
demand greatly exceeds the number of graduates. In Marietta, residential and commercial development
abounds, fueling the need for Civil Engineering Technology graduates.
