SCIENCE OLYMPIAD WORKSHOPS and INVITATIONALS
Various workshops are scheduled to provide coaches with event specific information.
A key part of most workshops will be hands-on involvement and the actual performing
of many events. The workshops provide a great way to share information from experienced
coaches and event supervisors. Certificates of attendance will be provided and teachers
may be eligible for Professional Development Units.
These workshops fall into a number of different categories:
- 3-7 hour workshops held in various place around the state. These workshops will deal with general aspects
of coaching an olympiad team and a brief discussion of most or all events in both
B and C. Division. Usually 2-4 people will be involved in providing information about
all events. Presently there is no fee for the workshop
- Week long workshops : intense workshops sometimes involving 2-3 hours for some events. The National Organization
runs one such workshop each year in July in Arizona.
- Video broadcasts of training for some events: in the developmental stages. Stay tuned. With cooperation of Georgia Public Broadcast,
streaming videos may be produced. Access will be restricted to GA coaches.
- Event specific workshops/invitationals:some individuals around the state in the past have held event specific workshops at
a school. These workshops or invitationals vary in length from 2 to 6 hours.

Olympiad Invitational and Practice Tournaments
-
The olympiad competition should be viewed just as an athletic competition. Both require
practice. One way to practice is through practice invitational tourneys. Please consider
organizing a practice tournament.
Usually 1-2 schools will host a practice tournament. Some key aspects of invitationals:
- Most, if not all, events are held. Some sites will opt to do only some of the events.
- Often times, more than one team from a school may participate in a given event.
- Schools participating are usually responsible for running one or more events.
- Invitationals are great ways to practice and to increase student and parent interest
and also.
- GASO would like to see more practice tournaments in November, December, or January.
Help is available from the director in organization, communication etc.
- New schools hosting a practice/invitational tournament will receive $150 from GASO
to use in their Science Olympiad program.
