Mentoring for the Future City Competition is about advising, teaching, coaching, and providing guidance. Middle school students
are familiar with the roles of the scientists from their science classes, but the Future City Competition may very well be
a student’s first contact with an engineer.
Future City is a wonderful way to get 6-8th graders involved in thinking about engineering and a career they might not otherwise
have considered. Post-program surveys show that a majority of students become more interested in math, science and engineering
after completing Future City.
Engineer Mentors work in an organization with one or more Future City Teams. Mentors are needed throughout the metro area and around the state. While the way Future City teams are managed may vary from school to school, the Mentor generally meets in school with the team an average of every two weeks for 1-2 hours. And of course attends the competition to continue to support and encourage their team. The Engineer Mentor assists the students in understanding:

Judges are needed prior to the competition to judge Virtual City designs , the research essays and city narrator. Judges are
also needed for the day of competition, January, 21, 2012, to judge the scale models and presentations. Judges are provided
with scoring rubrics and score sheets.
