SPSU Speech Team

Build skills. Make friends. Win trophies!

The SPSU Speech Team is your opportunity to build your research, speaking, and networking skills through intercollegiate competition. We travel to tournaments across the Southeastern United States, where we compete against other universities in public speaking and dramatic reading. Click here to read brief descriptions of the 11 events you can choose from.

We believe in every student's ability to succeed in our activity. If you're an undergraduate SPSU or GHC student in any major, we welcome you!

To get started:

  • Just show up for our weekly team meetings, every Monday at 5:30 p.m. in the Atrium Building, J-212.

  • Join the SPSU Speech Team Yahoo! Group to communicate with teammates and see our travel schedule.

  • Email Professor Misty York for more information.

You can earn up to 4 hours of class credit for competing on the Speech Team.

Actors James Earl Jones, Adam Sandler, and Neil Flynn all competed in speech.

Speech alumni have become world leaders, like U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan, South African President Nelson Mandela, and U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson.

The friends and connections you make in our activity will stick with you for a lifetime.
