Ken and Elaine Rainey Endowed Scholarship

The Ken and Elaine Rainey Endowed Scholarship is funded by the Kenneth and Elaine Rainey Endowment. The purpose of the scholarship is to recognize the achievement of a deserving junior pursuing the B.S. in Technical Communication, the B.A. in English and Professional Communication, or the B.A. in New Media Arts, degrees offered by the English, Technical Communication, and Media Arts Department. The Scholarship Selection Committee will determine the scholarship recipient. The scholarship recipient should exemplify the spirit of learning and service that Dr. Ken Rainey represented. Information about the scholarship appears on the ETCMA Department home page. The annual scholarship will be a minimum of $500.


Brief Biography of Emeritus Professor Kenneth T. Rainey

Dr. Kenneth T. Rainey was Professor of English, Technical Communication, and Media Arts at Southern Polytechnic State University from 1989 to his death in 2006. He was the department chair for three years and taught a wide range of graduate and undergraduate courses that included document design, graphics, multimedia, technical writing and editing, and research methods.

Dr. Rainey excelled at inspiring both students and faculty alike to pursue a lifelong commitment to learning and service. He was recognized internationally for his excellence in teaching, research, and service. He received many awards including Fellow of the Society for Technical Communication (STC), the STC”s Jay Gould Award for excellence in teaching technical communication, Southern Polytechnic’s Outstanding Faculty Award in 1992, and Southern Polytechnic’s Teacher of the Year Award in 2001. In addition, he is listed in “Who’s Who in American Education” and “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.”

The Society for Technical Communication recognized Dr. Rainey’s distinguished career in education, research, and professional service by creating the Ken Rainey Award for Excellence in Research, which is given each year to an STC member who has made significant contributions to the body of research in technical communication.


Make-up of the Scholarship Selection Committee

The Scholarship Selection Committee will consist of a minimum of three members but no more than five members. At least one member should be a professional communicator from industry. Members will serve a two-year period. The committee will oversee the application process, review applications, and select a reward recipient, if the committee determines that there is a deserving recipient.

 
Award Criteria

To be eligible, the student must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be fulltime ( a minimum of 12 hours for the fall and spring semesters)
  • Must have a minimum of 18 hours in major with a minimum of 6 hours in courses beyond Area F. These 18 hours must have been completed at SPSU.
  • Must have completed no more than 90 hours toward graduation by the end of Fall 2011
  • Must have a minimum of a 3.2 overall GPA
  • Must have a minimum of a 3.5 GPA in the major


Application Process

  1. Applicants must submit a 500-word essay that addresses the applicant’s qualifications for the scholarship.

  2. Applications will be accepted between the first day of spring semester and March 1 of the same semester.

  3. The Scholarship Selection Committee reviews the application material and decides on a recipient, if there is one.

  4. The scholarship recipient is notified by mid-April.

  5. The name of the scholarship recipient is submitted to the Director of Advancement so that scholarship funds can be set aside.

  6. The Rainey family is notified of the scholarship recipient.

  7. The scholarship recipient is recognized at the fall scholarship banquet sponsored  by the Office of Advancement.
