B.A. New Media Arts

Just Approved! Bachelor of Arts in New Media Arts

In the summer of 2011, the English, Tech Comm, and Media Arts (ETCMA) department was very pleased to learn that their newest degree, the B.A. in New Media Arts, had received approval at the state level.

As a result of this approval, the BA in New Media Arts degree program is accepting students for the fall of 2011. If you're interested in a degree that combines technology with both the fine and practical arts, this is the degree for you.

The B.A. in New Media Arts offers you a degree that translates the practices of the traditional fine arts into today's current new media contexts. Our New Media Arts degree emphasizes both the creativity and practical applications you'll need to work in fields such as graphic design, web design, multimedia development, or video production.

Traditionally, fine arts such as painting, sculpture, or drawing remain separated in both thought and practice from graphic design, multimedia production, and other professional practices of the applied arts. ETCMA, however, recognizes the valuable connection between these two areas of study and has, through the B.A. in New Media Arts, created a program that combines theory and practice as only a polytechnic university can.

Our degree incorporates elements of the fine and applied arts with technology and will encourage your growth in the areas of creativity and practical application.

You can expect to develop a strong foundation in the traditional fine arts and learn to translate these skills to new media contexts. You'll learn to approach the technical aspects of new media application as both an artist and technician.

Our program also includes the valuable knowledge you'll need in theory, cultural contexts, and media affordances.

You'll leave the B.A. in New Media Arts with the skills to produce video games, movie and television special-effects, and three-dimensional media. Based on the growing number of mobile technologies, demands for web site development, and computer graphics adaptation there will be significant opportunities for employment and professional growth. You'll have a competitive edge in meeting workforce needs by emphasizing both the aesthetic and technical aspects of new media arts and production.

Your portfolio, your voice

With your B.A. in New Media Arts, you'll have an academic degree and a portfolio that showcases your skills. You'll show employers what you can do in visual communication with your compelling graphic, multimedia, and web design work.

Beyond the bachelor's degree

Like our other undergraduate degrees in Technical and Professional Communication, the New Media Arts degree prepares students for graduate study. Our graduate degrees in Information Design & Communication (IDC) or Information & Instructional Design (IID) may be one of many options you, as a graduate of our B.A. in New Media Arts program, may want to consider.
