Change your idea about English degrees at SPSU

The English, Technical Communication, and Media Arts (ETCMA) department reflects the university's mission to provide dynamic and innovative programs of study.

We're not what you think of when you think English.

In ETCMA, English is just our starting point. As a polytechnic university, we know you need a different kind of English degree to succeed today. We reconfigure what it means to communicate effectively--for undergraduate and graduate study--in a world where visual and verbal communication intersect with technology and rapid change.

No matter what your background, ETCMA at SPSU is a place you can engage in both visual and verbal communication. It's a place where you can study the broader idea of media and culture in communication.

We're the departmental home to composition, literature, public speaking, music, drama, and art. We've still got the basics, but we've created degrees and courses that will give you the ability and vision to transform your future.

    Undergraduate degrees. Graduate degrees. Certificates.

ETCMA is your starting point for study as an undergraduate or graduate student.

As an undergraduate student, you can choose from:

    • Bachelor of Science in Technical Communication (BSTC)
    • Bachelor of Arts in English and Professional Communication (BAEPC)
    • Bachelor of Arts in New Media Arts (BANMA)

You can focus in specific areas such as journalism, instructional design, graphics, information design, multimedia, science writing, or small group communication.

You can also do a minor in technical or professional communication, or choose our undergraduate online certificate in technical communication

At the graduate level, you can choose from:

    • Master of Science in Information Design and Communication (MSIDC)
    • Master of Science in Information and Instructional Design (MSIID)
    • Graduate Certificate in Technical Communication
    • Advanced Certificates (specializations)

Our graduate degrees take you beyond the basics to a whole new level. Whether you choose Information Design & Communication or Information & Instructional design, your M.Sc. will define you in ways most other graduate degrees can't. Our graduate certificates mean you can focus on a select core-competency as a way to increase your expertise.
