Because SPSU is a polytechnic university, we offer the IDC degree as a online master of science (M.Sc.).The M.Sc. designation reflects that our program is a combination of theory and application. For you, this means the IDC degree combines the critical thinking, analysis, and research of graduate-level study with real-world applications.
By combining theory, practice, and research, our carefully designed curriculum means you'll learn about current developments in the field. You'll have an edge on technical communication or information design careers. Your comprehensive program of study is offered as a challenging and engaging online experience. Your instructors are SPSU faculty and each member has a Ph.D. in his/her area of expertise.
Through our coursework, you'll learn to:
In the IDC master's degree program, you'll focus on your specific area of interest such as visual communication, multimedia, or usability testing, to name just a few. With a master's degree, you'll be prepared to take on new roles and responsibilities. You'll have a credential that can make a difference both personally and professionally.
Our degree program consists of 36 credit hours or 12 three-credit courses. You start the degree by taking our foundation courses; these three courses prepare you for the remainder of the work in the program:
Each of the foundation courses is 3-credits (9 hours). Once you complete and pass each of these courses with a "B" or better, you'll also need to take our two required courses (6 hours):
You can take IDC 6004 and IDC 6110 at any time in your master's degree coursework.
You then have three options for completing your master's degree:
All courses—you take 7 more courses (21 hours) beyond the foundation/required courses and pass each class with a grade of "B" or better. In this option students tend to chose courses that, in consultation with their adviser, cluster in their area of interest.
Internship—you complete the foundation/required courses and designate 6 of your remaining 21 credit hours toward the internship course, IDC 7601-7603. Every internship must be approved by the Director before you begin.
Thesis—you complete the foundation/required courses and designate 6 of your remaining 21 credit hours toward the completion of a master's thesis, IDC 7801-7803.
All students must earn 36-credit hours in order to graduate. A course, internship, or thesis only counts toward graduation if you successfully pass. A grade of "B" or better is required to pass courses at the graduate level. In an internship or thesis, the "S" indicates you've successfully completed the course.
If our master's degree fits with your personal and professional goals, we'd like to hear from you. SPSU is on the semester system and our classes start in August and January of each year. In order to evaluate your information and provide you with an admissions decision, we'll need your application materials as follows:
July 1: for courses starting in the Fall Semester (mid-August)
November 1: for courses starting in the Spring Semester (early January)
