In this session, we will discuss best practices for developing a sound course structure. Through hands-on activities, users will upload content; build learning modules, placeholders, and content to create rich, structured, learning paths for students.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Use best practices for managing files
  • Implement some best practices for building your course structure
  • Create learning modules
  • Create placeholders
  • Replace placeholders with files or content items
  • Add files and other content items to learning modules

Groups

In this workshop, you will get hands-on experience with the Group tool and how it can be used to create groups and group activities.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Access and use the Groups tool for creating and managing student groups
  • Design group activities including discussion forums and chat rooms.
  • Issue dropbox assignments to individuals or groups

D2L and Grades

This hands-on workshop will introduce faculty to the Grades tool. This tool is used to house grades from different learning tools throughout the course (i.e. Discussions, dropboxes, and quizzes).

Learning Outcomes:

  • Access the Grades tool
  • Understand the weighted or points grading system
  • Use the Grades Setup Wizard to establish your gradebook’s functionality
  • Manage grades and settings
  • Grade items (i.e. Discussions, Dropbox, and Quizzes)

Best Practices in Action

This hands-on workshop will present some of the best practices for developing courses for online delivery.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Develop a consistent course structure
  • Create redundancy of course material presentation through multiple tools in D2L
  • Understand the importance of digital media content

TurnItIn (Turn-it-in)

Location: CTE Computer Classroom Prerequisites: None

This hands-on workshop will introduce faculty to the Turnitin 3rd party application. This application is used to verify that the work that students are submitting are original works and not plagiarized from any books, articles, websites, or other students’ submitted work.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Create a dropbox folder with plagiarism detection
  • Enable Turnitin in their current assignment dropboxes
  • Retrieve the originality reports
  • Share the originality reports with students

Advanced Availability/Special Access/Conditional Release

This hands-on workshop will introduce faculty to the restriction options. These features are used to control when and what users can access within the course content.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand applying restrictions to their course
  • Set and adjust availability dates
  • Create and attach release conditions
  • Assign students and groups to have special access

Using the News Tool in D2L

This hands-on workshop will introduce faculty to the News tool. This tool is used to relay announcements to course participants as well as present content to users for review.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Access the News tool
  • Add Quicklinks to a news item
  • Schedule news items to show and hide according to the course schedule
  • Show students how to enable notifications, so that they can receive texts or emails when news items are made available or updated

Using Rubrics in D2L

This hands-on workshop will introduce faculty to the Rubrics tool. This tool is used to evaluate student submissions to assigned course interactions (i.e. Discussions, dropboxes, and quizzes).

Learning Outcomes:

  • Access the Rubrics tool
  • Develop a rubric
  • Attach a rubric to a discussion, dropbox, or quiz
  • Publish the rubric results to the grades tool
