Scholarship of Teaching and Learning - Spring 2013

SoTL is a key way to improve teaching effectiveness, student learning outcomes, and the continuous transformation of academic cultures and communities. Thorough research questions and methodologies applied to teaching and learning, the making public of that research and its results so that it can be analyzed and critiqued, and through the constructing of a growing body of knowledge about teaching and learning, college and university teaching is seen as a serious intellectual activity that can be evidence and outcome based.

Location: CTE Flexible Classroom Coordinator: Adeel Khalid

As part of our efforts to promote the Scholarship of Learning and Teaching (SoTL) at SPSU, we will be continuing the book club in 2012-2013 at the Center of Teaching Excellence. The club will meet every other week to discuss what is expected from an instructor and how they can improve their teaching and student learning while converting this into scholarship. Come join us every other Tuesday from 12pm-1pm at the CTE to discuss the topics with fellow faculty. The book club is open to all faculty members. All participants will be provided a copy of the book. The club provides many teaching-related discussions and exchanges of ideas. Contact Adeel Khalid at akhalid2@spsu.edu for more information.

After attending the book club meetings, participants learn the following about quality teachers:

  • What they know about how students learn
  • How they prepare to teach
  • What they expect of their students
  • How they conduct classes
  • How they treat their students
  • How they evaluate their students and themselves

Research Learning Community (RLC) is a subsidiary of the CTE. RLC provides a platform where faculty members can share common values and beliefs related to scholarly inquiry into student learning and the practice of teaching. This provides an opportunity for faculty at SPSU to actively engage in Scholarship of Teaching and Learning while learning together. The community will be based on advanced pedagogical design. Faculty member will be able to bring their ideas, share them with others, seek help, and work together with the aim of making the research public in the form of conference and journal publications.

If you have a unique idea about teaching, if you are interested in working with other faculty members across disciplines, or need help getting your research published, join us for one of our meetings at the CTE.

Location: Library Rotunda Presenter: Dr. Donna Llewellyn

Dr. Donna Llewellyn, Associate Provost for Learning Excellence and Director for the Center for Teaching Enhancement of Teaching and Learning at Georgia Tech, will be returning to the S PSU campus. The workshop, “Getting Started with the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning,” will introduce participants to the process of scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). She will discuss the transitions from effective and scholarly teaching to scholarship of teaching.

This will be an interactive session – come prepared to discuss your experiences thus far with SoTL and to work on an action plan for a new project (or further development of an existing one). Participants will leave the session able to discuss the elements of a SoTL project in general as well as the next steps for a specific project related to one of their classes.
