2006 Dec 19   All's Well that Ends!: Final grades have been entered into BANNER and should have been visible to you yesterday. (I can't tell from my account when your grades are released.) Of 21 undergraduate students who took the final exam, fourteen of you, two thirds of the class, earned course grades of A or B. Congratulations, and thank you for making this an easy class to teach. As I expected, completing all the homework was very highly correlated with earning a good grade.

You had an opportunity to supply feedback to the University on the SIR II report. Don't forget that you can also supply feedback at http://www.ratingsonline.com/index.phtml and http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/. The first site allows for a bit more detail. If you choose to do either of these, please make an effort to inform your colleagues rather than just plugging in numbers.
2006 Dec 12   Possible Job Opportunity: I have received the following email, edited slightly for brevity: I am an owner of a local graphic design / marketing firm and we are  expanding our web development staff. We are very interested in  interviewing students who are interested in being a challenge and  would like to work in a small studio environment.

We currently need to fill a position rather quickly, however we are  also growing and need to increase our staffing over the course of  the next few years.

If you are interested in following up on this, send your resume directly to Ms. Amanda Sutt, asutt (at) 123shoot.com. Their Web site is http://www.123shoot.com.
2006 Nov 26   Syllabus Revision: The due date for Assignment 10 has been changed to December 4.
2006 Nov 12   Syllabus Corrections: Bogus dates in the syllabus have been corrected. The topic of this evening's lecture has been corrected. (We've already covered Case and Strategy.) The due date for Assignment 9 has been changed to next Monday.
2006 Nov 01   About On-Time Attendance: It is discourteous to your classmates to come into the classroom after the scheduled start time of class. They are presumably in class to listen, not to be interrupted by people who are habitually late.

So, you should be in class on time or expect that I will find suitable negative consequences if you are habitually late.
2006 Oct 31   Assignment 8, Part 2: One of you has pointed out that there is a piece missing from Assignment 8, Part 2. Copy your XML file a second time to a8p2.xml and link your XSL style sheet to it as shown in the example at the bottom of p. 333. The link from your index page should be to a8p2.xml.

The on-line assignment has been corrected.
2006 Oct 30   Grading "Backwards": I have been attempting to get grading caught up. One of you has pointed out to me that feedback on the most recent assignments would be helpful for tonight's exam, so I did those first. I will then go back and pick up the two earlier assignments.
2006 Oct 30   Enumerated Attribute Values: If I have told you to look up enumerated attribute values, see the slide entitled "Enumeration in DTDs" in the October 18 slides.
2006 Oct 16   Assignment 7 Due Date: The due date for assignment 7 is changed to Monday, October 23. The on-line syllabus has been updated.
2006 Oct 7   Assignment 6 Error Corrected: An error in Assignment 6, Part 4 has been corrected. Part 4 required you to do exercises 4 and 5 on p. 227.
2006 Sep 18   Syllabus Error Corrected: An error in the syllabus has been corrected in the on-line copy. The last day to withdraw with a grade of W is October 10.
2006 Sep 17   Final Examination: The final examination for this course will be December 11 from 6:00 PM until 7:50 PM in our regular classroom. If you have a conflict with another examination, see the Catalog for the procedure for resolving exam conflicts. The final will be given only at the scheduled time. Be there!
2006 Sep 12   Assignment 3: I have revised assignment 3 slightly to make it clear what type of style sheet is needed. For exercises 2 and 5, use an external style sheet. For exercise 6, use a document-level style sheet. (Note: you aren't asked to do all three of these exercises; pick one for the assignment.)
2006 Sep 03   Availability by email: I want to be available to you be email. If I didn't, I wouldn't have put my email address at the top of the syllabus. However, I need your help. More than 75% of the email I receive is spam. Spammers put plausible names on their junk, and subjects like, "Important Question." At this point in the semester, I still don't recognize everyone's name; it is especially likely that I might fail to recognize you if the name in your email messages doesn't match your name on my class roll. A message with a subject like, "Important Question" and a name I don't recognize is highly likely to be discarded unread.

In our first class, and in your syllabus, I have asked you to include the course number in the subject line of any email you send. I explained in class that I have set up filter rules in my email to haul such messages to the top of my inbasket. I went to that trouble because I want to be available to you. If you include the course number, your message will get answered as promptly as I can deal with it; if you do not, at best your message will get answered after those who did include the course number. At worst, your message may be discarded unread.

I am getting messages from some of you that are of the form, "X doesn't work." You aren't telling me what you attempted, what result you got, or what result you expect. I have to respond by asking those questions. That means it takes two exchanges of mail to get your question answered, when possibly we could have done it in one. If you have a problem, the more information you can include in that first message, the more likely it is that I'll be able to reply with an answer instead of a bunch of questions.
2006 Aug 27   Logging in and Editing Your Files: I have prepared a brief (nine minute) audio and slide lecture showing you how to log in for the first time and edit your index.html file. You can find it here: http://www.spsu.edu/cs/faculty/bbrown/it3204/it3204_special_logging_on.html. You may want to download and print the slides for this lecture before you view the lecture so that you can use them to take notes. The slides are here: http://www.spsu.edu/cs/faculty/bbrown/it3204/it3204_special_logging_on.pdf. I really wanted to have this available to you sooner, but it turns out that a minute of recorded lecture takes about an hour of preparation.
2006 Aug 24   Help Uploading Pictures: If you still need help uploading a picture to your Web page, you will find help in the form of a brief (six minute) audio and slide lesson here: http://www.spsu.edu/cs/faculty/bbrown/it3204/it3204_02_2a.html. You may want to download and print the slides for this lecture before you view the lecture so that you can use them to take notes. The slides are here: http://www.spsu.edu/cs/faculty/bbrown/it3204/it3204-02-2a.pdf.
2006 Aug 24   Arrow Keys and the Windows Telnet Client: If you are using the Windows telnet client and the arrow keys seem to misbehave, type export TERM=vt100 before invoking pico/nano. (Uhhh, by the way... this information is in Working with Your Web Page. You did read that, right?)

We are actually running "nano," the successor to pico. It has been aliased to make the instructions work right, but it seems to be even more averse to Windows than its predecessor.

You might want to consider SecureCRT, which has a free 30-day evaluation and a very cheap price for students, or PuTTY, which is even cheaper, namely free. Either is a substantial improvement on the Windows telnet client.
2006 Aug 23   Computer accounts are set up: If you were on the class roll as of 10:00 PM yesterday, your account has been set up. This is a manual process, and I've been known to fumble-finger one or two in the past, so if you have trouble logging in, please write to me. You must connect by telnet and change your password before you will be able to get FTP to work.
2006 Aug 22   Assignment 1: One of you has found that Jakob Neilsen has updated his list for 2005. Thanks for finding that and letting me know! The class may use either the 2003 list or the 2005 list for assignment 1; just be sure I know which list you're using. The 2005 list is here: http://www.useit.com/alertbox/designmistakes.html.
2006 May 30   Watch This Space: Announcements of interest to the class will be posted here. You are responsible for this information!
