Department Description
The Computer Science programs at Southern Tech are concerned with the science and
practice of developing and using computer systems in industry and business.
Features of the B.S. program with major in Computer Science:
- full range of courses offered for both day and night students
- basic areas included are programming principles, data structures, computer architecture
and assembly language, databases, programming language concepts, software engineering,
operating systems, applications programming, and a major project course.
- students either choose a minor in another area of study or take additional courses in CS
in areas such as computer networks, AI, real-time systems, OOP, computer graphics, etc.
Features of the M.S program in Software Engineering:
- Courses offered for the working professional (nights and weekends)
- Includes transition courses to give the necessary background to succeed even if you do
not have a formal degree in software engineering or computing.
- Culminates in a major project component in which you will perform analysis, design, and
implementation on a project of practical significance in software engineering.
- Core courses include research methods and presentations, advance database systems,
software engineering I & II, software project management, formal methods in software
engineering.
- Other courses include object oriented analysis and design, user interface design and
implementation, computer graphics and multimedia, object oriented user interfaces with
prototyping and usability engineering, and others.

Features of the M.S. program in Computer Science:
- courses offered for the working professional (nights and weekends)
- transition paths for students coming from other areas
- core courses in programming language concepts, computer system architecture, algorithmic
processes, research methods, distributed database concepts, and intro to software
engineering
- project or thesis required
- other courses available include human factors, adv. software engr., computer networks,
real-time systems, object-oriented analysis and design, AI, computer graphics, etc.

Software Engineering:
- gives practitioners the opportunity to advance into leadership positions
- the focus is on sharpening capabilities to function effectively in software engineering
teams producing higher quality software
