Re: Changes to Course Syllabi of Fall 2006 Based on Capstone Outcome Assessment of Fall 2005

According to the Capstone Outcome Assessment (Fall 2005) that was provided I make the following recommendations for changes to my courses syllabi

CNST 3000 - Computer Applications in Construction

For CNST 3000 Computer Applications in Construction I propose the following changes to the course syllabus:

  1. Add textbook for MS Office Portion of the Course
    1. A Guide to Microsoft Office XP Professional - Lawrenceville Press 2002
  2. Add reference guide for SureTrak - developed by Javier Irizarry
  3. Add section on course policy on use of WebCT-Vista for course administration
  4. Add statement on course policy regarding grade revisions (limited to one week after grade assignment has been returned or grade has been posted on WebCt-Vista)

For CNST 3000 Computer Applications in Construction I propose the following changes to the course content:

  1. Continue to develop lab exercises and assignments more related to construction for Excel and Word.
  2. Add lectures on database application (MS Access).
  3. Add more group presentations in PowerPoint to promote practice in public speaking and group work.
  4. Explore the possibility of offering all course examinations via WebCt Vista to release lecture time and use it for actual lectures and labs.

CNST 3500 - Building Codes

For CNST 3500 Building Codes I propose the following changes to the course syllabus:

  1. Add Reference book - Building Codes Illustrated by Ching and Wnkel
  2. Add section on course policy on use of WebCT-Vista for course administration
  3. Add statement on course policy regarding grade revisions (limited to one week after grade assignment has been returned or grade has been posted on WebCt-Vista)

For CNST 3500 Building Codes I propose the following changes to the course content:

  1. Continue to improve lectures by increasing visual interaction (increased used of graphics)
  2. Explore the possibility of offering all course examinations via WebCt Vista to release lecture time and use it for actual lectures.

CNST3110 - Building Techniques and Methods I

For CNST 3110 - Building Techniques and Methods I, I propose the following changes to the course syllabus:

  1. Text book has been changed. I will include this in the syllabus.
  2. Add section on course policy on use of WebCT-Vista for course administration
  3. Add statement on course policy regarding grade revisions (limited to one week after grade assignment has been returned or grade has been posted on WebCt-Vista)

For CNST 3110 - Building Techniques and Methods I, I propose the following changes to the course content:

  1. Will continue to improve lecture material using part of the material used in online course in Spring 2006.
  2. Explore the possibility of offering all course examinations via WebCt Vista to release lecture time and use it for actual lectures.

CNST 1000

In response to outcomes assessment conducted during Fall 2005, the following changes were made to the CNST 1000 course:

Outcomes assessments indicated that the textbook for this course was not satisfactory.  As a result, an implementation plan was prepared in Fall 2005 that would replace the textbook.

The textbook replacement plan has been implemented and includes student subscriptions to ENR magazine, which is published weekly by McGraw-Hill.  This approach exposes the students to current information about the field of construction in and outside of the United States.  This publication familiarizes students with cost, safety, legal, environmental, and other issues critical to the construction manager.

In addition to class discussions that draw on ENR topics, quizzes have been added to the CNST 1000 course to ensure that students are indeed reading the ENR magazines.

Finally, students are reminded that courses that they will be taking in the Construction curriculum will ultimately lead them to their Senior Capstone course (CNST 4900).  They are regularly encouraged to prepare themselves for CNST 4900 and to not lose sight of their ultimate goal.

CNST 4900

In response to outcomes assessment conducted during Fall 2005, the following changes were made to the CNST 4900 Capstone course:

A faculty sign-off sheet was added to the list of requirements – This ensures that each student sees a faculty member when they are approximately 30% and 75% complete with that portion of their project and that the faculty member is satisfied with the work that is being done.  The faculty sign-off sheet was added to the syllabus for the course to further support it as a requirement.

In the past, the Capstone Handbook was either available only in hardcopy format, or was difficult to print in its online version.  The Capstone Handbook is now available to students on the Construction web site and in “pdf” format.  This increases the likelihood that students will print the handbook and be more familiar with the requirements of the course than in the past.

A “Capstone Statement of Understanding” (CSU) was also instituted.  The CSU identifies specific milestone items and due dates.  Students sign this agreement which places the burden of complying with the course requirements on their shoulders.  The signature portion of the CSU reads “By signing this statement of understanding, I signify that I have read the capstone handbook and syllabus for this semester and understand the requirements for completion of this course.”

As indicated in the Sept. 2005 Implementation Plan, these actions are hoped to increase student awareness of the requirements of the Capstone course and increase the amount of student/faculty interaction during the course.
