Geographical Information Systems Certificate

Southern Polytechnic State University
Civil Engineering Technology Department
Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Certificate Program

The program is designed to provide a practical set of GIS marketable skills in one of the many areas of GIS applications such as surveying, real estate, marketing, geography or business.  Students should have an interest in mapping and spatial analysis.

There are five courses required in the program:

  1. SURV 2110     Introduction to Mapping                                  4
  2. SURV 3421     Geographical Information Systems I               4
  3. SURV 4420     Remote Sensing                                             4
  4. SURV 4422     Geographical Information Systems II              4
  5. SURV 4110     Geographical Information Systems Practice   3

                                 Total Semester Hours                                   19

Course Description

Please note that certain courses have one or more prerequisite courses (which are not part of the certificate program).  If you have the required subject knowledge you can request a prerequisite waiver from the CET Department Chair.

SURV 2110 Introduction to Mapping:                                (3-3-4)

Prerequisite:  MATH 1113

Introductory class in basic surveying and mapping skills including geographic information Systems (GIS).  Topics include scales, leveling, horizontal measurements, GPS mapping, topography, map projections, GIS analytical tools, data sources, raster and vector data and software applications.  Emphasis will be on small scale mapping.

SURV  3421 Geographic Information Systems I:              (3-3-4)

Prerequisite:  SURV 2221

GIS Concepts, spatial data analysis; information systems, digital elevation models; surveying and mapping components of GIS development.

SURV 4420  Remote Sensing:                                             (3-3-4)

Prerequisite:  SURV  3421

Remote sensing systems; ground truthing; mapping applications; satellite imagery integration into GIS.

SURV  4422  Geographic Information Systems II:             (3-3-4)

Prerequisite:  SURV 3421

Continuation of GIS I; data collection techniques; advanced systems and macro programming.

SURV 4110  Geographic Information Systems Practice:  (1-6-3)

Prerequisite:  SURV 4422 or Permission of Department Chair

A capstone course in the applications of GIS technology.  Course requires a project developed  with an industry partner in applying mapping and GIS.
