MSCE

The Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE) offers concentration in three critical areas: (1) Structural and Geotechnical Engineering, (2) Transportation and Pavement Engineering, and (3) Environmental Engineering and Water Resources.

  • The Structural and Geotechnical Engineering concentration focuses on the analytical and experimental studies of the behavior of structures, such as buildings, bridges, and dams, subject to loads, and the subsurface investigation and the analysis of soil properties which provide the basis of the foundation design.
  • The Transportation and Pavement Engineering concentration focuses on the safety and efficiency in moving people and goods. This includes planning, design, operations, rehabilitation and maintenance of all types of transportation facilities, such as highways and streets, mass transit systems, railroads, airfields, and ports and harbors.
  • The Environmental Engineering and Water Resources covers the application of engineering principles to improve and maintain the environment for the protection of human health, for the protection of nature's beneficial ecosystems, and for the environment-related enhancement of the quality of human life.

The Civil Engineering program offers both thesis and non-thesis options for the Master of Science with a major in civil engineering. Either option must be approved by the student’s advisor:

Thesis Option

In addition to a minimum of 24 credits of course work, this option requires a research thesis (6 credits) for a 30 credit minimum total. The research and thesis describe the results of an in-depth research investigation and are directed by a graduate advisor. This option allows for 3 core courses, a 4 course concentration, and 1 course in other concentration.

Non-Thesis Option

This option requires a minimum of 30 credits of course work. The Non-Thesis option allows for 3 core courses, a 4 course concentration, and 3 courses in other concentration. This option is well suited to persons with professional experience.

The MSCE program provides technical skills to qualified candidates from the engineering community and other related disciplines. Also, the program satisfies the needs of professional firms and Civil Engineering educational programs across the US and internationally. Graduates with this specialized professional education will enhance practice capabilities in state, local and federal agencies as well as in private industry throughout the global marketplace.
