What are the benefits of the Joint Enrollment Program?

2. What
is the purpose of the Joint Enrollment Program?
The Joint
Enrollment
Program provides qualified Georgia high school students the opportunity
to earn post secondary institution credits and Carneige unit credit
while
simultaneously enrolled in a college, university or technical
institution.
3. How
are students selected to participate in the Joint Enrollment
Program?
A student first
completes
the Accel paperwork (available at www.gsfc.org) and counseling
procedures at his/her high school.
After completing the counseling session with the high school counselor,
the student requests an application for enrollment from the public
college,
university, or technical institute of his/her choice and follows all
directions
for enrollment. Once the student is accepted for enrollment, the high
school
counselor provides the student with an Accel Form that the student
takes to the Joint Enrollment Advisor.
4. What
are the admissions requirements for the Joint enrollment program
at Southern Polytechnic State University?
A student must:
- Be
enrolled as a junior
or senior in high school
- Be at
least 16 years
old
- To
earn
dual credit,
students must have a SAT score of 530 or an ACT score of 23 in the
English; have asn SATscore of 530 or an ACT score of 22 in the Math
section. Students can be admitted to SPSU with a minimum of 500
on the SAT and 21 on the ACT but cannot receive dual credit for courses
taken.

track for completion
of CPC requirements by the end of the senior year in high school

written permission
from parents

5. Where
can a student get additional forms?
Forms for the program should be obtained from the high school counselor
or on the internet at www.gsfc.org. Applications to SPSU can be
obatined online (www.spsu.edu) or at the Registrar's office on campus.
6. What
expenses are covered by the Joint Enrollment Program?
The Joint Enrollment
program is funded through the HOPE program (except it will
not pay for summer courses). Hours taken as a Joint Enrollment student
count against total HOPE entitlement. For additional information, check
with the Financial Aid Office.
7. When
can courses be taken?
Courses may be taken
each
semester of the regular academic year (except summer courses will not
be
paid for).
8.
Who is responsible for notifying the local high school of enrollment,
grades,
and credits?
The post secondary
institution
is responsible for notifying the high school of each post secondary
option
eligible student who has enrolled, and, after course completion, the
post
secondary institution is also responsible for sending a transcript to
the
high school.
9.
How are Carnegie Units awarded?
Local boards will
award
one Carnegie unit for each 5 semester hours successfully completed by a
student in an approved post secondary course.
10. Are
Joint Enrollment students exempt from states’ assessment requirements
for graduation?
No. Students must
still
take the Georgia High School Graduation Test and any end-of-course
examinations that may be required..
11. What
GPA or SAT score is needed to enroll?
Students must have a
3.0
GPA and a combined SAT of 500 on the verbal and 500 on the math portion
(ACT scores must be 21 English and 21 math) to participate at Southern
Polytechnic State University. For dual credit, the SAT score must be
530
and the ACT score must be 23.
12. How
do Joint Enrollment grades affect high school GPA?
Grades for approved
courses
reported by Southern Polytechnic State University will count the
same as grades earned in high school.
13. Will
a student be able to register for the desired courses?
Yes—if possible. It
may
be impossible to get into some popular courses or courses which are not
being taught in the desired semester. Southern Polytechnic State
University
will work closely with the student and university program departments
to
try to ensure students receive desired courses, especially those needed
for high school graduation.
14. What
courses may a student take at Southern Polytechnic State University?
With the exception
of the
final units of high school English, social studies and/or mathematics
with
qualifying SAT or ACT scores, a university course may not be used to
fulfill
the University System of Georgia’s CPC requirements.
Students with SAT
1 Mathematics
scores of at least 530 or ACT Mathematics scores of at least 22/23 who
have not completed the final unit of mathematics may be permitted to
fulfill
those high school requirements with Math 1111 College Algebra.
Generally,
Joint Enrollment students will have completed their CPC mat
requirements
before their senior year and will be prepared to take Math 1113
Precalculus
or a higher level math course. High school advanced algebra/trig taken
in high school should provide better preparation for majors requiring
calculus
and should be taken no later than the junior year. Joint Enrollment
students who plan to register for a math course should first take the
Math
Placement Exam (MAT) which is given each term on Southern Polytechnic
State
University's campus.
Students with SAT
1 Verbal
scores of at least 530 or ACT scores of 23 who have not completed the
final
unit of high school English and/or Social Studies may be permitted to
fulfill
these high school requirements with the appropriate college
courses
taken through the Joint Enrollment program. These courses include
English
1101, English 1102, Political Science 1101, and Economics 1101.
In Natural
Science and Foreign
Language, all Joint Enrollment students must have already completed
all college prep high school courses to be eligible for Joint
Enrollment
in these areas. Joint Enrollment students must also complete
all prerequisite course requirements to be eligible to register for
Southern
Polytechnic State University courses.
Eligibility for
advanced
math, foreign language, or fine arts is determined by the academic
department.
