DISABILITIES




The Disability Services Coordinator is located in the ATTIC, Building J, Room 253, and coordinates support services for students with temporary or permanent disabilities. Individuals eligible for services include but are not limited to those with mobility, hearing, learning, visual, speech, or specific neurological disabilities. Services are free of charge on a self referral basis.
 

Services:
Students who have a disabling condition and need academic accommodations are responsible for voluntarily identifying themselves as having a disability by scheduling an appointment with the Disability Services Coordinator as soon as possible. Students with disabilities who need assistance are invited to work with our offices to ensure that their needs are accommodated to the maximum extent possible. Our goal is to make your college experience at SPSU as rewarding as possible by being ready, willing, and able to serve students with disabilities. Listed below are kinds of disabilities we are prepared to assist students with:

Student Responsibilities:
To become eligible for special services at SPSU, a student must verify the specific learning disability by having a psychological evaluation on file with the Disability Services Coordinator. This evaluation must

  •     be conducted by a qualified psychological examiner;
  •     be within three years;
  •     include, at a minimum, a full-scale intelligence test, a standardized individual achievement test, and psychoeducational tests relevant to the problem area;
  •     be approved by the Disability Services Coordinator and/or the Regents Center for Learning disorders;
  •     bear evidence that the student is not achieving commensurate with his/her age and ability level in one or more of the areas listed below:
             oral expression
             listening comprehension
             written expression
             basic reading skill
             reading comprehension
             mathematics calculation
             mathematics reasoning

The student is responsible for all examination fees. A student who suspects a learning disability but who does not have the proper documentation is strongly advised to contact the disability Services Coordinator for appropriate referrals.

Special Services:
Special services and considerations are available under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and through the Disability Services Coordinator for any learning disabled student at SPSU. All services are implemented on an individual basis. Resource programs and aids also include the central Computer Labs, the math help sessions, the Tutoring facility in the ATTIC and the general faculty.

Campus Facilities:
Many SPSU buildings are not yet barrier free. It may be necessary to relocate classes and other activities. Any student with mobility limitations wishing to participate in a program in an inaccessible building should contact the ATTIC or the person responsible for the activity to request that appropriate accommodations be made.

Affirmative Action:
The Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 504, provides that "no otherwise qualified handicapped individual in the United States, as defined in Section 7 (6), shall, solely by the reason of the handicap, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

Americans with Disabilities Act:
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 gives civil rights protection to individuals with disabilities that are like those provided to individuals on the basis of race, sex, national origin, and religion. It guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities. SPSU strives for compliance with ADA. Please see the Disability Services Coordinator for any related problems.

Housing:
Accessible on-campus housing is available for students with disabilities. Contact the Director of Housing as early as possible to discuss the nature of the disability and the type of accommodation needed.

Medical:
The school  Nurse is on duty in the clinic in the Recreation and Wellness Center. Students with physical disabilities are urged to introduce themselves to the Nurse at the beginning of their first term at SPSU.

Campus tours:
Campus tours for mobility-impaired, visual-, and hearing-imparied students are offered on an individualized basis. Contact the Secretary to the Vice President for Enrollment Management to schedule a tour.

Parking:
Special parking permits are issued through the University Police Office. Documentation of the disability is needed. Parking places for the disabled are available throughout the campus.

Student Center:
The upper level of the Student Center is accessible to mobility-impaired students. An elevator connects the upper with the lower level, which houses the cafeteria, book store, lockers, and post office.

Registration:
On a case-by-case basis, students with a disability may advance register on a first-priority basis with the assistance of the Disability Services Coordinator. Early registration enables students with a disability to schedule their classes with consideration for items such as class location or transit time between buildings.

Library:
The librarians will work individually with mobility-limited and sensory-limited students to make services at the library available. Students with disabilities wishing to use the library should contact the Reference Librarian. Services needed by visual or hearing-impaired students may be requested from the Library Director.
