Mission Statement of the School of Arts & Sciences

The SPSU School of Arts and Sciences provides a broad-based liberal arts education through offerings in the Arts, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Environmental Science, English, History, the Humanities, International Studies, Mathematics, Physics, Political Science, the Social Sciences, Languages, and Technical Communication.

The School of Arts and Sciences also supports the University through courses designed to meet the needs of programs of all of the Schools within the SPSU community.

Mission Statement - The mission of the School of Arts and Sciences is to provide a broad range of programs and educational opportunities in support of the University. The School of Arts and Sciences emphasizes the application of the disciplines within its scope inside the framework of a liberal education and strives to serve the needs of the student as both an individual and as a citizen. To this end, the School provides programs and activities to support course work and lead to an education covering a broad range of knowledge. In addition to this, the School of Arts and Sciences embraces the broader aspects of technology, including practical applied skills and theoretical knowledge. The School provides opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students for original research, advanced training and skills, and exposure to cooperative experiences with private industry and government agencies. Additionally, the School strives to help students develop a critical perspective on themselves and their work by providing them with a broad view of the world including their own cultures and the cultures of other societies in the global community. Students are active participants rather than observers; they are regarded as citizens and future leaders as well as potential masters of their disciplines.
