Minutes of the School of Arts & Sciences, August 15, 2002
- New faculty were introduced.
- Old business: Work is still being done on the bylaws.
- Tom Rotnem gave a report of the Observation Committee, which included
the following:
- Peer observation should be a learning experience for both parties.
- The process should be formative, not summative, i.e. it should provide
feedback.
- Peer observation should include a pre-class consultation, the
observation itself, and a post-class consultation.
- Comments from Dean Gabrielli:
- The biology degree has been approved, and the content of the degree is
up to us. Construction of the biology labs has just begun.
- Several grants have been awarded to A&S faculty.
- A&S no longer has its own computer support technician.
- VPAA Pfeiffer briefly joined the meeting to announce foundation funding
for this year:
Each dean will get $1000 from the foundation, each program $500. Academic
Affairs has a reserve fund of $12,0000. Student awards have been equalized
at $250 each.
- More comments from Dean Gabrielli.
- The Honors Program will begin Fall 2001, so the honors committee needs
to be formed again. This committee has 2 charges:
- Review what the previous committee approved
- Establish criteria for Honors faculty.
- Faculty searches in three programs have been approved, in Mathematics,
Social and International Studies, and Physics, Chemistry, & Biology.
- The MGT group will hold a meeting on the faculty salary study on
Thursday September 12, from 1:00 to 2:30 PM. They will talk to schools one
at a time. Faculty are encouraged to let their Program Heads know if they
are interested in attending.
