School of Arts & Sciences Faculty Meetings
Minutes of the School of Arts & Sciences, November 19, 2002
- Discussion of the proposed document on peer observation.
David Dayton spoke on the proposed observation guidelines. Dean Gabrielli
commented that with pending rereorganization, his stake in the process is
greatly reduced. His reservations with the document include: 1) It does
not say that observations are mandatory, and 2) control of the process is
in the individual's hands. A lengthy discussion ensued on:
whether the observation should be mandatory or not
how standardized the process should be
whether observation should be used for faculty evaluations, for
professional development, or both
formative versus summative aspects of the document.
The committee will produce a final draft for the next A&S meeting.
- Dean's Announcements
- The bylaws committee will be reconvened when rereorganization details come
forth.
- The honors committee will soon have guidelines for honors courses, and an
honors director will soon be chosen.
- Program Heads will have a greater role this year in faculty evaluations
than they did last year. Otherwise, the procedure will be the same.
Packets will be shared with Program Heads. The Dean will inform the
faculty soon of the details about how teaching, service, professional
growth, and academic achievement will count in the annual evaluation.
