Study Abroad

Scholarships, Grants, and Stipends

for University System of Georgia Students

The University System of Georgia wants more students to study abroad.  The Board of Regents is sponsoring five new or redesigned scholarship and financial support programs in 2003 to assist students in pursuing academic studies in other countries.

Regents Work and Study Abroad Stipends (New!):  Special on-campus student employment positions are available for students planning to study abroad.  Students can earn up to $500 per semester.  Students may elect to have their earnings credited directly toward program costs.  Employment assignments vary; many include assisting with study abroad promotion and recruitment.  This program is open to all USG students in good academic standing who have made initial application to study abroad.  Deadline:  Continuous, but early application encouraged.

Regents Global Ambassador Travel Grants (New!):  Qualified students with mature leadership skills may apply for grants that reimburse up to $1000 of travel expenses for study abroad programs.  Grant recipients will participate in service-learning activities abroad as determined by their campus advisor or study abroad program director.  Global Ambassadors promote Georgia ’s international education policy through public engagements with schools, civic organizations, local governments, businesses, and other groups.  Deadline:  Continuous, but early application encouraged.

Regents Study Abroad Assistantships (New!):  Selected USG study abroad programs offer paid on-site assistantships for qualified, enrolled students to perform a variety of key support roles in program administration, residence life, course research, co-curricular events, and other activities.  Non-traditional students are particularly encouraged to apply for these positions.  Stipends of up to $1,000 are available.  Deadline:  Varies by program.

Regents ISEP Grants (New!):  The University System of Georgia is a member of ISEP—the International Student Exchange Program.  ISEP is a network of more than 200 universities in 30 countries around the world.  All USG students admitted to ISEP partner institutions automatically receive a $500 waiver of the ISEP placement fee (other costs are roughly equivalent to USG in-state tuition, room, and board).  ISEP Application Deadlines: See International Programs Directory for more information.

Note:  Other study abroad scholarships and support may be available at your institution or through your study abroad program.  All regular financial aid (Pell grants, loans, HOPE scholarships, etc.) may be applied toward the cost of USG study abroad programs.

These five programs are funded jointly by the Board of Regents and each of the 34 colleges and universities in the University System of Georgia .  Not all programs may be offered at every institution.  Eligibility is limited to undergraduate students enrolled in associate’s and bachelor’s degree programs at USG institutions.  Each program has additional selection criteria.  Visit your local study abroad office or campus international coordinator for complete details.
