Chemistry AAC Responses
to Proposed Georgia Performance Standards

The members of the Advisory Committee on Chemistry have considered the proposed Georgia performance Standards for Chemistry. The consensus of the members is that the Standards seem appropriate as designed at virtually all levels. Students who meet the goals involved with the Standards should have the background necessary for entering the University System.

There are some concerns about implementation of the Standards. One concern centers on computer and laboratory skills. Not all school systems may have sufficient computer facilities available to meet some of the Standards. Another concern was whether the college students had the mathematics training in high school needed for the college chemistry. In order to be successful with the Standards for Chemistry all the students would be expected to come into the program with an adequate mathematics background. By far, the mail concerns expressed by the Committee members essentially centered on assessment. How will the schools verify that these Standards are being met at every level? Without valid assessment the value of the Standards is questionable.
