Interpretation of Policies and Procedures

Overview

This P&P includes the following main sections after the Overview:

  • Background
  • Interpretation process
  • Procedure for appealing interpretation

Background

A policy sometimes can be interpreted in several ways, in which case additional clarification is needed. This P&P provides a mechanism to resolve such questions as expeditiously as possible.

Interpretation Process

  • The president of Southern Polytechnic State University shall make (or cause to have made) all official interpretations of any of the policies and procedures of the university.

  • These interpretations shall be made in writing and shall bear the president's signature.

  • The president, in making an interpretation, may refer the document for review, following P&P No. 2010.0 (Originating/Amending a policy or procedure).

  • A file of the official interpretations will be kept in the president's office and will be available for reference to interested parties. Copies of any interpretations will be appended to the reference copies of the respective P&Ps held in the president's office, the vice president for academic affairs' office, and the Library. The president's office will direct the CIO to place the interpretations on the web site as well.

Procedure for Appealing Interpretation

The president's interpretation of a university policy or procedure, may be appealed to the Board of Regents, as described in Article viii of the Bylaws of the Board of Regents.

1.

An appeal of the president's interpretation of a policy or procedure of the university shall be submitted in writing to the president, with a statement of all points of disagreement.

2.

The president shall submit copies of the appeal, along with his or her interpretation, to the executive secretary of the Board of Regents for consideration by the chancellor and/or the Board of Regents as appropriate.
