Evaluation of Academic Deans, Directors, and AVPAA

Overview

This P&P includes the following main sections after the Overview:

  • Background
  • Evaluation process

Background

Academic deans, academic directors, and the assistant vice president for academic affairs (AVPAA) are evaluated annually as part of the regular personnel review process. For deans and for directors with significant supervisory authority, the review will include the use of evaluation forms completed by appropriate members of the university community. For academic directors with little or no supervisory authority and for the AVPAA, the review may or may not include such evaluation forms-at the discretion of the VPAA.

Evaluation Process

The process will proceed as follows:

Step

Process Description

1.

By early March, the vice president for academic affairs (VPAA) will ask the deans, directors, and AVPAA to prepare a brief summary of accomplishments. This summary should relate to the job description for the position.

2.

During the third week of March, the coordinator of planning and assessment will send out evaluation forms. The completed forms will be returned to the coordinator of planning and assessment by the end of the first week of April.

3.

Listed below are the three categories for whom evaluation forms are required, along with the groups completing the forms.

Note:

Although forms will of course be anonymous, groups of forms will be coded so that it is clear they have been completed by a member of the specific group in each bullet below.

Review of school deans

The following groups will be invited to complete evaluation forms to be used for the review of the school deans:

  • Program heads in the dean's school
  • Members of the Expanded Cabinet
  • Faculty and staff of the respective school

Review of the dean of extended university

  • Directors in the Extended University
  • Members of the Expanded Cabinet
  • Staff members in the Extended University

Review of academic directors with supervisory responsibility

  • Members of the Deans Council
  • Academic program heads
  • Staff members in the director's unit

4.

  • The originals of the completed forms for each administrative member will be sent to the vice president for academic affairs in early April.
  • These forms are considered confidential personnel material and will not be shown to the person being evaluated. However, summaries of the information will be shown to the person being evaluated by the VPAA during the annual evaluation.

5.

  • The VPAA will review the evaluation results for individuals in the three groups listed in Step #3.
  • The VPAA will review the summaries of accomplishments for all deans, directors, and the AVPAA.
  • The VPAA will complete written evaluations and then meet individually with each person being evaluated to (a) review the past year and to (b) discuss goals for the coming year.
