Deans Council Minutes

12-5-2001

NOTE: At times, issues of confidentiality may require that some items discussed in meetings be excluded from these minutes.

PRESENT: Bill Barnes, Dick Aynsley, Joel Fowler, Alan Gabrielli, Mike Murphy, Sandy Pfeiffer, Dawn Ramsey, Judy Waits

1. Budget Email from Rob Whitaker:
Fowler will check with Whitaker about his email regarding insufficient funds in program/dean/vpaa budgets.

2. 10/4 Workweek:
Deans are to give Pfeiffer, in writing, a list by person of who will be working the 10/4 schedule the week of December 17. It was noted that all programs should clearly post the schedule for that week for students. Also, there was a question on paychecks since the business office will be closed December 21. Waits checked with Pam Grunke who said paychecks will be released a day early on Thursday, December 20. There is an updated payroll calendar on the web at http://www.spsu.edu/HR/december_payroll.html.

3. Non-tenure Track Faculty:
Pfeiffer received email from Frank Butler further clarifying the issue of non-tenure track faculty positions. Pfeiffer will talk individually with the deans about using non-tenure-track faculty vs. temporary full-time faculty.

4. Graduate Assistants:
It appears there is some confusion about graduate assistant issues--for example, pay, tuition waivers, use of graduate tuition differential money, etc. Fowler is to gather information on this subject.

5. Certificates Leading to Degrees:
After much discussion, it was decided that Ramsey and Murphy will write a short proposal on certificates leading to degrees.

6. Gwinnett Center:
The Gwinnett Center is interested in having SPSU offer junior and senior level courses on site, beginning Fall 2002. IT and CS are two areas of interest. After much discussion, we decided we wanted to talk more with Gwinnett officials about the possibility of offering IT courses. Murphy will be our contact person for the possible program and initiate a meeting.

7. Scholarship (Workload):
The Workload Committee will be rewriting the P&P on "Faculty Activities," with special emphasis on the issue of scholarship for T1 and T2 faculty. Deans will ask program heads to edit/revise scholarship ideas and forward them to Fowler by 3:00 on Friday, December 7.

8. GASET:
Aynsley is in contact with Chattahoochee Tech and DeKalb about articulation.

9. Next Two Meetings:
The Deans Council will meet January 2, 2002 (as well as next week, December 12). To next week's meeting, the deans are to bring nominations for Governor's Teaching Fellowships.
