NOTE: At times, issues of confidentiality may require that some items discussed in meetings be excluded from these minutes.
PRESENT: Bill Barnes,
Dick Aynsley, Alan Gabrielli, Mike Murphy, Sandy Pfeiffer, Dawn Ramsey,
Judy Waits, Steve Hamrick
1. Regulating T-1 Faculty:
Hamrick has noticed that
several graduate programs with low enrollment have a high number of T-1
faculty. He asked the deans about establishing a set of criteria. Deans
responded that when the school commits to offering a certain program, then
they must commit to offering the classes as well. However, deans will look
at a tighter schedule of how frequently classes are offered term by term.
Deans are to convey the responsibility to the faculty about the connection
between enrollment and T-1 status. Deans will revisit the issue at another
meeting.
2. Standardized Class
Size:
Hamrick asked deans to consider
the best way to standardize class size. Deans responded that equipment
often dictates the size. Also, SPSU promotes small class size. There are
safety issues and SACS issues as well. Hamrick was looking for a balance.
Deans are to tell Hamrick what should be the maximum size for any given
class.
3. Senate Meeting:
Pfeiffer reminded the deans
of the Senate meeting tomorrow and that the main topic would be reorganization.
4. Campus-wide Meetings:
Pfeiffer said the email
about the campus-wide meetings would go out tomorrow, October 10, 2002.
5. Overlapping Courses:
Deans were asked to look
at overlapping courses. They are to list the ones with the same or similar
title and decide if any should be deleted.
6. Summer Schedule:
Deans discussed various
summer terms and are going to ask their respective faculty. Different term
lengths of 5, 8, 9, or 10 weeks were suggested. At the next meeting we'll
discuss faculty pay for summer classes. Everyone was reminded that the
requirement for next summer is more stringent than last summer in that
we now must cover faculty benefits in the "break-even" formula.
7. Next Meeting:
The next Deans Council mainly
will focus on further discussion of the summer schedule and faculty pay
for that session.
