9-25-2002

NOTE: At times, issues of confidentiality may require that some items discussed in meetings be excluded from these minutes.

PRESENT: Bill Barnes, Dick Aynsley, Alan Gabrielli, Mike Murphy, Sandy Pfeiffer, Dawn Ramsey, Judy Waits, Steve Hamrick

GUESTS: Pat Garrett, Bill Gruszka, Scott Tippens

1. Campaign:
Garrett noted that participation by all faculty in the fund-raising campaign is crucial this year, especially in light of the challenge match. Her office is working on the structure of a campaign to raise one million dollars. Also, deans are to communicate with the Foundation as to which corporations/people they are contacting so that the Foundation can coordinate the effort. Garrett is to establish a prospect list that she will share with the deans.

2. IT Reorganization:
Gruszka presented the proposed IT reorganization plan for comments, emphasizing that it is still in the discussion phase. After much discussion, the deans and CTE director were asked to send their views/rationale to Pfeiffer by noon, Monday, September 30. The Deans Council will hold a special follow-up meeting on the subject next Tuesday, 3 to 4 pm.

3. Middle Georgia College:
The deans discussed the viability of programs with Middle Georgia College. Pfeiffer is to invite Mary Ellen Wilson, VPAA at MGC, to a future meeting and to tour our labs.

4. Criteria for Starting/Continuing/Ending a Program:
Pfeiffer asked the deans to present their ideas on interim guidelines for ending degree programs. Suggested criteria included trends in enrollment, current number of majors, number of faculty invested in the program, and overall cost to the university. Discussion will continue at the next meeting.

5. Summer School:
Pfeiffer relayed the good news from the president that the Summer 2002 budget was in the black. Pfeiffer asked for ideas for next summer. It was agreed that the pro-rata method be avoided, if possible, with the clear understanding that the president's budget goals for Summer 2003 must be met. There will be further discussion at the next Deans Council meeting.
