NOTE: At times, issues of confidentiality may require that some items discussed in meetings be excluded from these minutes.
PRESENT: Bill Barnes,
Dick Aynsley, Alan Gabrielli, Mike Murphy, Dawn Ramsey, Judy Waits, Steve
Hamrick
ABSENT: Sandy Pfeiffer
1. Honors Program:
Gabrielli said that the
Honors Program needs a framework to work better. It was suggested that
a P&P might be appropriate. After discussion, the deans suggested that
the specifics of the Honors Program be in the catalog and that the framework
be contained within the P&P. Gabrielli will collect feedback and suggestions
and write the draft P&P for a future meeting. After a final P&P
is written, it will be sent to the Faculty Senate.
2. Naming Project:
Hamrick had some written
guidelines from the Office of Advancement about naming opportunities on
campus. The deans will review the document before next week's meeting,
which Pat Garrett will attend.
3. Math 1109:
Gabrielli had some data
on 1111 and 1113 math courses across the USG, the state, and SPSU. The
deans discussed various options about adding sections of 1109. There was
also discussion about running courses on excellence in math teaching for
area math teachers. This would be an intense, skilled, high-profile program.
It was suggested that a proposal be written to get NSF money for an eminent
scholar or a team of scholars.
4. MGT Report:
Hamrick gave the deans a
draft of the preliminary report and asked for their thoughts. Deans suggested
only the most relevant information should be in the report and the rest
should be in the addendum. Also, it was suggested that the report allow
for inflation.
5. CIT:
Ramsey said the CIT is surplusing
some equipment. If any program is interested, contact Ramsey.
6. New Faculty Orientation:
Ramsey has planned the new
faculty orientation. There will be several sessions scheduled including
lunch. Deans may attend if they wish. Invitations will be sent to the new
faculty soon.
7. NSF Proposal:
Ramsey has information from
NSF to write a proposal increasing women in science and engineering. Deans
are to work with Ramsey on the proposal.
8. Annual Teaching Load:
Hamrick is still finding
data to add to the original report. Deans are to send comments to Hamrick.
9. Summer School:
Deans discussed the length
of summer school with suggestions of having both eight and ten week sessions
to be determined by each dean. Hamrick will investigate if there are any
obstacles.
