NOTE: At times, issues of confidentiality may require that some items discussed in meetings be excluded from these minutes.
PRESENT: Bill Barnes,
Dick Aynsley, Alan Gabrielli, Mike Murphy, Sandy Pfeiffer, Dawn Ramsey,
Judy Waits, Steve Hamrick
1. Graduate Faculty Status:
The deans discussed the
interpretation of the Graduate Faculty Status P&P and concluded that
those faculty with a final appointment of 2003 do not need to formally
apply again until fall 2003.
2. Faculty Searches:
A group ad will be placed
in the Chronicle of Higher Education for several positions. Pfeiffer encouraged
the deans to make good use of full-time NTT (non-tenure track) positions
when considering new hires--given the new guidelines approved by the BoR,
the state of the budget, and the need for more support of lower-level courses.
Also, having a few more NTT positions gives us flexibility to move faculty
where they are most needed as programs expand and contract.
3. Extra Compensation
P&P:
Ramsey handed out the final
draft of the Extra Compensation P&P. Pfeiffer will review and send
to the Faculty Senate.
4. Reorganization Review:
Pfeiffer reported that he
met with Senate Moderator Tom Currin, who supported the points included
in the latest minutes of the Academic Leadership Council. The deans also
agreed that the ALC meeting was on target. Currin soon will call a Senate
meeting to discuss the topic, and Pfeiffer will send an update to Academic
Affairs.
5. Space:
Hamrick noted that he is
continuing to evaluate academic space so that we use it as productively
as possible.
6. Spring Schedule:
Pfeiffer asked Hamrick to
check the Faculty Assignment Reports to be certain we are being consistent
in following the T1, T2, and T3 guidelines.
7. Future Meetings:
Topics for future deans
council meetings will be (1) possibility of shorter summer sessions, (2)
update on the Salary Equity Study, and (3) moving ahead with the part of
the academic plan that will establish clear, consistent criteria for adding,
deleting, or continuing academic programs.
