NOTE: At times, issues of confidentiality may require that some items discussed in meetings be excluded from these minutes.
PRESENT: Bill Barnes,
Dick Aynsley, Joel Fowler, Alan Gabrielli, Mike Murphy, Sandy Pfeiffer,
Dawn Ramsey, Judy Waits, Steve Hamrick
GUESTS: Patricia
Garrett, Jeff Orr
1. Teacher Preparation:
Fowler prepared a handout
related to teacher preparation. The deans discussed seven possible options
for our approach to teacher preparation. After much discussion, they decided
on options to present at the May 1 Expanded Cabinet meeting.
2. Advising:
Orr has talked to all program
heads about their advising programs. He found many different and useful
styles of advising. Pfeiffer recommended that the Expanded Cabinet discuss
acceptance of the P&P that has been reviewed by the faculty, that the
ATTIC provide training for advisors beginning fall term, and that we continue
to monitor projects such as the mandatory advising pilot program in A&S.
Orr stressed that advisors should know where to go for answers to advising
questions they cannot answer.
3. "Sink or Swim" Discussion
Item in Enhancement Team report:
Pfeiffer has been asked
to lead a discussion in the Expanded Cabinet on strategies for eliminating
the perceived "sink-or-swim" approach toward students in some courses,
as mentioned in the external Enhancement Team report. He asked that deans
send him suggestions by noon on April 25.
4. Summer 2002 Schedule:
Fowler led a discussion
on remaining details about the registration process and guidelines for
the summer session.
