Deans Council Minutes

3-20-2002

NOTE: At times, issues of confidentiality may require that some items discussed in meetings be excluded from these minutes.

PRESENT: Bill Barnes, Dick Aynsley, Joel Fowler, Alan Gabrielli, Mike Murphy, Sandy Pfeiffer, Dawn Ramsey, Judy Waits

GUEST: Betty Wootton

1. SIRS:
Betty Wootton explained problems she is having with SIRS evaluations. For example, 141 forms were not processed last fall because they were incorrectly completed. ETS, which handles the scoring, said its scantron does not recognize anything not bubbled with #2 pencil. Betty returned the unprocessed questionnaires to the deans, who will talk to faculty about procedures. On April 2 spring packets will be delivered to program offices. The deans discussed the problem of having enough pencils on hand. As a result, we'll order hundreds of cheap, presharpened golf pencils. Betty will add a label to the outside of the envelope with several reminders.

2. Career Services and Certificate Students:
Ramsey distributed a memo from Ron Koger about Career Services for certificate students. Koger had met with Regenia Doyle and Barry Birckhead, and it appears Career Services does not provide full service for certificate students. It was decided that Ramsey would meet with Koger, Doyle, Murphy, and Barnes to discuss the issue further.

3. Teaching Performance of Part-time Faculty:
Aynsley suggested that the P&P be revised to include more focus on the teaching performance of part-time faculty. Pfeiffer will review the P&P. He reminded deans that each school is responsible for orientation and class observations of new part-time faculty and asked deans to have a mechanism in place by fall.

4. Faculty Recognition:
Aynsley asked if there could be recognition for part-time teacher of the year. The discussion broadened to full-time faculty. Ramsey suggested finding ways to reward good teaching separately, since the Outstanding Faculty Awards do not necessarily reward excellence in teaching. Murphy mentioned that teaching, service, and scholarship could each be rewarded. Pfeiffer will ask the Senate to consider three different annual Outstanding Faculty Awards-teaching, service, and scholarship.

5. Graduate Assistant P&P:
Murphy asked for comments on the graduate assistant P&P. He will doublecheck to make sure the document meets all SACS criteria.

6. Budget:
Fowler discussed the upcoming budget, including summer, with the deans. The group agreed on a strategy for the budget presentation in April.
