Deans Council Minutes

3-19-2003

NOTE: At times, issues of confidentiality may require that some items discussed in meetings be excluded from these minutes.

PRESENT:  Aynsley, Barnes, Gabrielli, Hamrick, Murphy, Pfeiffer

ABSENT: Ramsey, Waits

1. Departments/Chairs:
The deans again discussed criteria for the department chair search.  They agreed that the issue of stipends for department chairs should be reconsidered when budget conditions improve.

2. Yamacraw:
Pfeiffer reported that the university will be required to pay the remaining $150,000 for the current Yamacraw education budget, an amount we had hoped would be paid by external sources.

3. Deans and Teaching:
Pfeiffer expressed his appreciation to the deans for the teaching they did this year and for the commitment they have made to teach next year.

4. Summer 2003:
Within a week, Hamrick will inform faculty about the details of the compensation plan for the upcoming summer term.  The same general approach will be used this summer as last.

5. Math 0099:
The deans briefly discussed implementation of the Math 0099 course, just approved by the staff at the chancellor's office.  The course will be offered fall 2003 for the first time.

6. Positions/Budget:
Pfeiffer listed the eight faculty positions that would be funded for FY04.  He indicated that more positions might be added to the list once he has determined the degree to which budget reductions will affect operating budgets.  He also indicated he hopes to have zero cuts in faculty travel and in Library acquisitions.  He noted that accrediting bodies, including the one visiting this week, have reinforced the importance of adequate Library resources to support degree programs.
