Deans Council Minutes

1-30-2002

NOTE: At times, issues of confidentiality may require that some items discussed in meetings be excluded from these minutes.

PRESENT: Bill Barnes, Dick Aynsley, Joel Fowler, Alan Gabrielli, Mike Murphy, Sandy Pfeiffer, Dawn Ramsey, Judy Waits

VISITORS: Bill Gruszka and David Stone

1. Web CT:
For budgeting purposes, Gruszka and Stone asked the deans whether we should continue to support WebCT. The deans said yes, based on information received from faculty. Further, we should keep using USG's server as long as it is economical to do so (as opposed to using our own server).

2. Curie Training:
Jocelyn Clark is getting requests for reports and data from faculty. She thinks training on how to use curie reports would be useful and is willing to do seminars for program heads, deans, and others. Further information on training times will be forthcoming.

3. International Visits:
Pfeiffer may be going to China in the spring to secure exchange agreements. Rich Bennett will go to India for the same reason. There was some discussion about use of visiting faculty from these two countries.

4. Signage in Building J:
Plant Operations has been removing signs taped to walls and doors. The rule is that no signs can be taped to walls or doors because repainting may be necessary. Signs can only be tacked to bulletin boards. However, it was noted that not all classrooms have small bulletin boards adjacent to the door. Pfeiffer will talk with Plant Ops.

5. Registration Issues:
Ramsey said registration issues were a hot topic at the Staff Council meeting. It was suggested that Steve Hamrick arrange a meeting of all involved in registration to discuss ways to improve the process for students. Pfeiffer will talk with Hamrick.

6. Extra Compensation:
Before signing SPSU extra comp approval forms for faculty, the deans are to make sure there are no scheduling conflicts with normal faculty responsibilities. The form must be completed before work is done. Another consideration is whether there should be limits on the amount faculty can be paid for extra comp in a year. Deans are to email their suggestions to Ramsey by mid February. Ramsey is drafting the revised extra comp P&P.

7. Cost of Searches:
Pfeiffer asked deans for an estimate to cover the cost of faculty searches. About $5,000 per search was suggested as a figure.

8. Pre and Post Tenure Review Information:
Pfeiffer will send deans information such as due dates by Monday, February 4.

9. Academic Space:
This will be the only topic on the agenda for the February 13. There are a number of questions that need to be answered about office and classroom space around campus.

10. Research Assistant Waivers:
After discussing stipends and tuition waivers for graduate and research assistants, we decided to invite Rob Whitaker and Pat McCord to the February 6 meeting to continue the conversation on these issues.
