Academic Leadership Council Minutes

11-14-2002

1. ALC Meetings:
There will not be an ALC meeting in December. The group agreed to hold ALC meetings once per term rather than monthly. It was noted that a special meeting always could be called if necessary.

2. Reorganization Adjustment:
Pfeiffer soon will write the recommendation to the president for the reorganization adjustment. First he will send a draft to deans to review and to forward to their program heads for review.

3. Budget Process:
Hamrick commented that Academic Affairs is heavily involved in the budget process this year. He and others are gathering data to support an increase in tuition. The rationale for the increase relates to SPSU's special purpose mission. It was noted, for example, that we have twice as many labs as classrooms, and that satellite programs, which the BOR encourages, are very expensive. Hamrick also said he will be visiting program secretaries to explain special coding for Banner. Apparently, we are losing money because codes are incorrect.

4. Advertising Positions:
Pfeiffer said that advertising was proceeding for tenure-track and non tenure-track (NTT) positions.

5. Graduate Faculty:
Pfeiffer noted that some enrollments in graduate programs cannot support the number of T1 faculty in those programs. In light of increasing budgetary concerns, one solution being considered is to link reduced teaching loads exclusively to the number of graduate courses taught (graduate courses fund our ability to offer reassigned time). If that change occurs, faculty with graduate status and who do not teach enough graduate courses to justify a course reduction will not be expected to maintain the same level of scholarship during the period of higher teaching loads as they would if they had the reassigned time. No decision has been made yet on the issue.

6. Accreditation:
Pfeiffer congratulated those programs that had undergone recent accreditation visits: engineering technology and construction.

7. Gallileo:
noted that there is the ability for more full text online. Faculty are encouraged to contact the Library for instruction.

8. Honors Program:
The Honors Program will begin fall 2003 and is still looking for a director.

9. CTE Open House:
The Center for Teaching Excellence will hold an open house Nov. 20 and 21 in H202 from 10:00 - 6:00. All faculty and staff are encouraged to stop by.

10. Holiday Lunch:
Pfeiffer encouraged the faculty to attend the Faculty/Staff Annual Holiday Luncheon on December 5. Deadline for RSVP is November 15, 2002.
