1. Academic Common Market:
Ron Koger spoke on this
issue. The program is run through the Southern Regional Educational Board
(SREB). Essentially, if we have a program not being offered in another
state, and we agree to have that program list with the SREB, then students
from out of state can attend SPSU without paying out of state tuition.
Program heads who wish to have their programs listed with SREB should
contact Judy Waits by October 15.
2. Scholarships:
Ron Koger reminded the ALC
that if someone gives money for scholarships, that money should be awarded
through financial aid. There is a mechanism by which an account will be
set up for the student and funds then given out through that account.
3. Degrees:
Pfeiffer said the Biochemistry
degree probably won't happen but that a Biology degree looks promising,
as does the Global Technology degree. As for the MBA, Frank Butler from
the BOR office soon will come to campus to discuss this change.
4. RETP:
Pfeiffer contacted Jane
Weyant at Georgia Tech about our interest in joining the Regional Engineering
Transfer Program. Jane is discussing the issue with the dean of engineering
and we are awaiting a response.
5. Distance Learning:
Pfeiffer will remind the
BOR office about our interest in having out-of-state DL students pay in-state
tuition. Later we will develop a P&P on Distance Learning, perhaps
using the former Distance Learning Committee to begin writing a draft.
6. Mandatory Advising:
Gabrielli presented a proposal
on mandatory advising, to help increase our retention rate. Students would
be advised if they have less than 45 completed credit hours. We would begin
now with the new entering freshmen. Transfer students would be included
for the first 15 - 20 hours on campus. Faculty would be trained in advising,
which could be handled in person, by email, or by telephone. Gabrielli
said there could be a mechanism whereby students would be locked out of
Banner until they are advised. Then a second pin number could be used.
It was noted that advising is in the faculty job description. A decision
was made to think further on how best to implement mandatory advising.
Program heads are to send Gabrielli suggestions via email by October
26. This topic will also be on the next ALC agenda.
7. Catalog Deadline:
Pfeiffer reminded the ALC
that the catalog deadline is approaching. Judy Waits has the Undergraduate
Curriculum Committee form on her computer and can distribute as needed.
ALC members should email Steve Hamrick any errors in the current catalog.
8. Authors Reception:
Mills reminded everyone
of the Authors Reception on October 10.
9. International Programs:
Bennett stated that International
Programs will have a link under Academic Affairs. The Academic Affairs
website is not online yet.
