Deans Council Minutes

September 26, 2001

NOTE:  At times, issues of confidentiality may require that some items discussed in meetings be excluded from these minutes.

Present: Bill Barnes, Dick Aynsley, Joel Fowler, Alan Gabrielli, Mike Murphy, Sandy Pfeiffer, Dawn Ramsey, Judy Waits

Consulting.  Pfeiffer will issue guidelines to faculty for reporting consulting on a regular basis.  It appears the P&P is not being followed in this regard.  At a later meeting the group will discuss more topics related to consulting and faculty workload.

Job Descriptions.  Job descriptions are complete for deans and program heads.  One change in the school dean description ensures that deans will share important information related to programs with the individual program heads—such as who has applied for reassigned time to support scholarship.

Evaluation Procedures.  Pfeiffer will use the senior administrator evaluation procedure for the school deans.  Each school dean will be evaluated by all faculty and staff in the respective school, as well as by some others outside the school.  Pfeiffer will conduct the review of school deans after the deans have evaluated their own units.  The procedure for evaluating the Extended University dean and the assistant vice president for academic affairs has yet to be determined.

Consistency in Instructional Support.  The group discussed the inconsistency in support for faculty in the area of teaching (internet assistants, TAs, etc.).  Fowler will generate a survey to the deans regarding instructional support.

New Positions Update.  Pfeiffer has submitted a request to the president regarding new positions.  After the president responds, he will share the results with the Council.  Because of budget uncertainties, hiring will proceed at a conservative pace.

Update on Undergrad Students with Previous Undergrad Degree.  Gabrielli discussed this issue with BOR staff.  It appears that students with a bachelor’s degree do not have to be treated like transfer students and thus do not have to complete the Georgia Core.  However, they do have to meet the pre-requisites and degree major requirements.  This issue needs further discussion, and Barnes will prepare general guidelines for the next meeting with respect to a new program in his school.
