Council Minutes
September 12, 2001

Joel Fowler, Alan Gabrielli, Mike Murphy, Sandy Pfeiffer, Dawn Ramsey, Judy

GUEST: Ron Koger
1. Transfer Articulation Day: Koger described the transfer articulation day on
September 28, to which we’ll invite academic vp’s from two-year and four-year
institutions. Pfeiffer will speak briefly on reorganization and school
structure. School deans will talk five minutes each on programs and majors.
Ramsey will discuss the certificate programs.
Program heads are encouraged to attend and eat lunch with the guests.
2. Orientation: Koger asked about the date of orientation for fall 2002. He’d like to have it on Monday, since nothing
is scheduled for Tuesday before classes start on Wednesday. The deans agreed to the proposal.
3. Advising: The group discussed the need for improved advising for entering
freshmen to increase retention. Koger,
Gabrielli, and Fowler will prepare an informal proposal on advising for
freshmen and present it to the council.
4. Catalog: The next catalog will be for one year, will combine undergrad and
grad information, and will apply to Fall 2002 through Summer 2003. Fowler will ask Hamrick
to include deans in correspondence with program heads concerning catalog
information.
5. Commencement: Koger presented a proposal for
summer commencement. Deans asked the
Senior Staff to reconsider for a variety of reasons. Pfeiffer will present the deans’ views to the
Senior Staff.
6. Salary Equity: The new grant writer, Joyce Brown, is meeting with John Henderson and
others to prepare criteria for a request for proposals (RFP) to send to firms
that perform compensation studies. The
guidelines will consider ranges for positions with respect to the market, and
recommended salaries for individuals.
7. Staff Evaluations: The deans are to inform staff members in writing that the program
heads will be (a) performing and annual evaluations of staff and (b) giving
raise recommendations concerning staff members to the deans.
8. New Faculty Positions: The council discussed all positions to be
requested for next year. By this Friday, the deans are to send Pfeiffer a memo
with their rationale and proposed salaries for the positions.
