October 24, 2001
NOTE: At times, issues of confidentiality may require that
some items discussed in meetings be excluded from these minutes.
Present: Bill Barnes, Joel Fowler,
Alan Gabrielli, Mike Murphy, Sandy Pfeiffer, Dawn Ramsey, Judy Waits
ABSENT: Dick Aynsley
RETP. SPSU has been informed that it will be invited to join the RETP
transfer program at Georgia Tech. In the
meantime, a coordinator needs to be chosen by Pfeiffer and Aynsley.
High
School Workshop. Ramsey said that Ken Rainey
(HTC) had expressed interest in holding a high school workshop in TCOM next
summer. Ramsey will follow up with
Rainey. The Deans Council strongly supports this pilot project, which could
serve as a model for future workshops.
Regents
Teaching/Research Awards. The group selected
individual and group nominees for most categories of the Regents Awards in
Teaching Excellence and in Research in Undergraduate Education.
Budget. There was considerable discussion about the
effect budget cuts will have on the remainder of the year. The first priority will be to cover course
sections so that we can expand enrollment.
Workload. There was much discussion about summer
workloads for faculty, including program heads.
Decisions will be made soon. The group
also talked about continuing agenda items for the Workload Committee related to
the 2002-2003 academic year and beyond.
Degree
Proposals. Pfeiffer noted that the Global Technology
proposal definitely will be on the November BOR agenda. The Biology proposal will be submitted in the
next week or two and, it is hoped, will be on the January BOR agenda. The Systems Engineering proposal will be
completed by no later than mid November, for submission at that time.
NOTE: The committee chair would
like to express appreciation to the passive voice for the assistance it
provides in preparing these meeting summaries.
