Deans Council Minutes

October 17, 2001

NOTE:  At times, issues of confidentiality may require that some items discussed in meetings be excluded from these minutes.

Present: Bill Barnes, Dick Aynsley, Joel Fowler, Alan Gabrielli, Mike Murphy, Sandy Pfeiffer, Dawn Ramsey, Judy Waits

Advising.  The deans summarized how programs within their individual schools handle advising. Gabrielli proposed a pilot program for Math and PCBS majors wherein an additional pin number would be assigned to students.  To receive the pin number, the student must have been advised.  Hamrick is to inform the faculty about the pilot program as it affects all students. Students who are not in Math or PCBS will not be assigned an extra pin number and thus will need to enter their pin number twice.  Again, this is a trial program.

Marshals for Graduation.  Names were submitted from each school for faculty and student marshals.  Those chosen were Mark Stevens (faculty marshal) and Bob Harbort (student marshal) for the graduation ceremony at 1:00 (School of Arts and Sciences, and School of Computing and Software Engineering).  Larry Logue (faculty marshal) and Tom Currin (student marshal) were selected for the 4:00 p.m. ceremony (School of Architecture, CET, and Construction, and School of Engineering Technology and Management.

High School Workshops.  Ramsey prepared a proposal for high school workshops next summer.  The focus is on recruitment, enrollment, and visibility.  We hope to bring students on campus for one to three weeks with a focus on a certain discipline.  After discussion, it was decided that the deans should go to the program heads to determine level of interest.  Aynsley suggested using the distance learning bus as a vehicle for advertising.

List of School Majors, Minors, and Certificates.    These lists were collected from the deans.

Systems Engineering and Biology Degree Proposals.  The Systems proposal is waiting on letters and should be ready by no later than the middle of November.  The Biology proposal is almost done.  Pfeiffer will check to see if it needs Senate approval or if it can be viewed as a revision of the Biochemistry proposal, which was already approved.

Budget Reductions.  Much gnashing of teeth preceded general agreement that we would push on and make the best of it.  The half-full glass awaits us.

Future Agenda Items.  Workload – October 24.  Distance Learning – October 31.
