Deans
Council Minutes
October 10, 2001
NOTE: At times, issues of confidentiality may require that
some items discussed in meetings be excluded from these minutes.
Present: Bill Barnes, Dick Aynsley,
Joel Fowler, Alan Gabrielli, Mike Murphy, Sandy Pfeiffer, Judy Waits
VISITOR: Steve Hamrick
Mandatory Advising. It was suggested that if such a system is
implemented, it should be called something more positive like enhanced advising
or full-service advising. Hamrick said
accommodations could be made in Banner, such as an alternate pin number to be
used after advising for entering each schedule.
Pfeiffer asked each dean to come to the next meeting with brief written
summaries of how each program now handles advising. Then we’ll proceed to
decide what kind of pilot program, if any, should be run next year.
Fall Registration During Spring. We
discussed the advantages and disadvantages of students registering for fall
term during the spring. It was decided that at this point there is no
compelling reason to have the fall schedule available in the spring.
Reinstated Students. Hamrick said that all reinstated students now
will be required to attend a seminar on enhancing skills for success in
college.
Regents Teaching/Research in
Undergrad Education Awards. The deans
are to seek expressions of interest from faculty and programs, screen
applications, and bring suggestions to the Deans Council meeting on October
24. SPSU can submit two individual
applications and two program applications.
Minors. We discussed several possible minors
(technology and psychology). Aynsley and
Gabrielli will inquire further as to student interest.
List of Majors, Minors, and
Certificates. Deans are to prepare a one-page list of each
school’s majors, minors, and certificates and send to Pfeiffer before the next
meeting.
Budget. Fowler and Pfeiffer gave some preliminary
general information about budget cuts.
External Money. Aynsley will lead a discussion on this topic
at a future meeting.
Graduation Marshals. Waits will find out graduation schedule and
give to deans. Deans are then to select graduation marshals--one for faculty and one for
student--and inform Pfeiffer by the next meeting.
P&Ps. A graduate student from TCOM is helping to
update and reformat the P&Ps. These
should be ready by the end of spring term.
