Bachelor of Applied Science Degree
Southern Polytechnic State University offers the
Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree for students transferring from
SACS accredited technical colleges. Five different
concentrations are available for this degree:
- Business Management
- Content Design (Technical Writing)
- Information Technology
- Laboratory Management
- Residential Construction Management
Overall Requirements
All BAS concentrations consist of 120 semester
credit hours. Sixty
of these credits constitute the University System of Georgia's core
requirements
(see below), while the other sixty credits are specific to the BAS
degree or are free electives. Students who have successfully
completed their AAS
degrees at an eligible technical college (and as part of the AAS
degree, selected courses
appropriate to the University System of Georgia core) should be able to
complete the BAS degree in 2 or 2 1/2 years on a full-time basis.
Core
Requirements
All BAS concentrations require 60 credit
hours
of core courses in the areas of
composition, mathematics, public speaking, humanities/fine arts,
science, and social sciences. Students can take many of the
required core courses while they are enrolled at their technical
college, as part of their AAS degrees. Please note that not all
core
courses are
offered at all technical colleges.

Transferring Credits from a Technical College to SPSU
In the past, many students found that when they tried to transfer
courses from their technical college AAS degree
to a university, many of their
credits wouldn't transfer. Southern Polytechnic State
University's
BAS degree and its concentrations have been designed to maximize
transferability, and to allow technical college graduates to obtain a
bachelors degree in an efficient manner.
Some courses will "automatically" transfer from any eligible technical
college to SPSU. A pdf file of the most current list of these
courses can be found by clicking here.
In addition, up to 38 semester credits from your AAS degree can
transfer as a "technical block" into the BAS degree. These
courses must be related to the concentration that is selected.
For example, students selecting the Business Management concentration
could transfer business-related courses within their AAS degrees as
their "technical block". All such transfers are
individually reviewed and must be approved by the Office of the
Registrar.

If your technical college is currently
not SACS accredited (i.e., if it is an applicant for SACS
accreditation, or is in candidacy, or not on the list at all), we
cannot "automatically" give you transfer credit. Instead,
our Registrar's Office will review your transcript with you, and
discuss how credit might be awarded. In most cases, you will be
allowed to take the course that would logically follow the courses you
have already taken at your technical college, and based on your grades
in those courses, credit will then
be given for the earlier courses. For example, if you took
College Algebra and Pre-Caculus at your technical college, we
would allow you to take Calculus I at SPSU. When you
successfully complete Calculus I, credit will then be given to you for
College Algebra and Pre-Calculus. In some cases, you may have to
take a placement exam.
For further information, please consult the Office of the Registrar.
