DATACENTER ADMINISTRATOR (Division of Information Technology) 09–339

POSITION SUMMARY

The Datacenter Administrator provides day-to-day support for the SPSU datacenter servers, software, and supporting infrastructure. The position’s primary focus is on datacenter infrastructure management, maintaining secure and verified backups, new system deployments, proper disposal of decommissioned systems, patch management, and maintaining the uptime, stability, and security of datacenter systems. This position will require frequent night and weekend hours to perform system maintenance with minimal disruption to campus operations and to handle any emergencies that may arise. The Datacenter Administrator reports to the Director of IT Systems, Networks and Security.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1.       Maintains a secure, clean and manageable datacenter environment.

2.       Maintains accurate system inventory, labeling, and system specific documentation.

3.       Monitors datacenter environmental factors, such as cooling and humidity; takes appropriate action to remedy the situation.

4.       Applies operating system and application security resources and product documentation in order to ensure systems are running with secure, stable, and supported software. Communicates with system stakeholders and application vendors to ensure minimal side-effects and disruptions.

5.       Monitors the stability and uptime of datacenter systems and software via logs and other reporting mechanisms; takes appropriate action to initiate repairs.

6.       Maintains accurate and verified tape backups of all datacenter systems including offsite copies as per campus tape backup policy.

8.       Maintains accurate system logs both local and via remote syslog server.

9.       Performs scheduled tests of datacenter infrastructure, including generators, fire suppression systems, and environmental monitoring systems.

10.   Monitors annual contract expirations, such as software licenses, ssl certificates, domain registrations, and maintenance contracts.

11.   Performs upgrades to existing and deployment of new systems, such as servers, storage arrays, equipment racks, power distribution, and required cabling.

12.   Assures the secure destruction of data as per policy on decommissioned systems.

13.   Interacts with customers to ensure that datacenter services are meeting the needs of the campus community.

14.   Assists in maintaining the campus Active Directory environment.

15.   Performs other duties as assigned.

 

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

1.       Proficiency in at least one platform independent programming or scripting language for use in system administration and automation preferred; Perl highly preferred.

2.       Enterprise experience with thin clients.

3.       Enterprise experience with server virtualization.

4.       Windows 2003 server administration experience preferred.

5.       Experience with Arkeia network backup software preferred.

6.       Experience with fibre-channel and/or iSCSI based storage preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS: A bachelor of arts/bachelor of science from an accredited college or university in Computer Science, Telecommunications or related technical field required and a minimum of three years experience working in an enterprise IT datacenter environment. Possess a superior customer service based work ethic. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, combined with an ability to convey complex technical ideas to lay persons. Ability to lift heavy objects up to 40lbs. The ability to work independently, without direct supervision. The ability to anticipate, identify, diagnose, and solve critical problems. Advanced knowledge of Linux/UNIX administration skills. Experience working with product technical support and dealing with vendors. Thorough knowledge and understanding of TCP/IP networking and related network services, such as DNS DHCP, subnets, basic routing. Experience supporting an enterprise class tape backup system. Experience deploying and troubleshooting x86-based server hardware.

 

 

DAYS/HOURS: Monday – Friday; 8:00am – 5:00pm

 

SALARY:           Commensurate with experience
